   <title>卫礼贤和他向往的地方——中国</title>

color: black; font-family: Verdana">Richard Wilhelm</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">）无疑是中国文化在德国最重要的传播者之一。他在</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">1926</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">年出版的著作《中国之魂》（</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana"> &bdquo;Die Seele Chinas&ldquo;</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">）</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana"> </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">正好触动了当时德国读者的神经，他们在第一次世界大战的灾难之后，试图从遥远的东方寻找新的意义所在，而卫礼贤在书中正是把</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">&ldquo;</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">来自中国的人生智慧</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">&rdquo;</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">推崇为</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">&ldquo;</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">现代欧洲的良药和救赎</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">&rdquo;</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">。到今天，卫礼贤之所以仍被几乎所有对中国感兴趣的德国人所熟知，归因于他对中国哲学核心著作的译介工作。他不仅把儒家思想的经典，如《论语》和孟子的著作译成德文，还翻译了道家的经典（《道德经》、《庄子》）、古老的神谕之书《易经》，以及墨翟的著作：一共八卷译文，并且一版再版。虽然现代汉学界早已认为卫礼贤的译文过时，但德国的读者不管这些。直到今天，卫礼贤的中国古典哲学译本仍然广受喜爱。</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">&nbsp;<br /><br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span><strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">从施瓦本到青岛</span></strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana"> <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">但在一开始，并没有任何迹象表明，卫礼贤会成为中国文化的拥护者。这位神学家</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">1873</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">年出生于斯图加特的一个玻璃画匠之家，后来就读于著名的图宾根神学院，也就是哲学家黑格尔、谢林，诗人荷尔德林和默里克的母校。这里的氛围深受施瓦本的新教思想和冥思传统的影响，德国哲学和文学传统的重要部分从这里产生。肯定是这些文化遗产，使卫礼贤能以不同于他的许多同胞的异样眼光看待中国。</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana"> <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">作为年轻的牧师和传教士，卫礼贤</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">1899</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">年被同善会派到青岛，当时德意志帝国刚刚在山东半岛南部建立的殖民地胶州。当时的殖民者倚</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">靠仆役，和中国人的日常生活十分隔绝，卫礼贤和在那里生活的其他德国人也不例外。但他很快就不满足于这种状况。他开始学习汉语，不久就跟中国人建立了联系。他的同胞们表现出的殖民者的高傲让他很反感。</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">1900</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">年，义和团起义爆发，德国士兵在搜捕起义者时欺凌中国农民，这时，卫礼贤挺身而出，和村老谈判，阻止了德国军队进一步的暴力行为。他用自己切身的感受来回应西方商人、官员和军队固执的成见。例如，在他的著作《中国之魂》中，他回忆起备受蔑视的苦力：</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">&nbsp;&nbsp; 东西方的中介者</span></strong><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana"> <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">后来，卫礼贤建立了一个德中小学和一所医院。与受过传统教育的中国官员的交往中，他开始了解中国文学和哲学。越是深入地研究中国古代的著作，他越是深深地敬仰中国的文化。对西方教会在中国的传教活动，他也表示出越来越大的怀疑。在晚年，他有一次提到，自己作为传教士没有使一个中国人皈依基督教，这让他颇感安慰。<img src="http://rocleere.blogbus.com/files/12286569171.jpg" border="0" alt="" align="right" /></span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana"> <br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 1920</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">年，当卫礼贤和家人一起返回德国的时候，中国已经变成了共和国。胶州在第一次世界大战期间被日本人占领，早就不再是德国的殖民地了。新一代的中国知识分子正为一个现代化的中国而寻求新的方案。</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: Verdana">1922</span><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; font-family: 宋体">年，卫礼贤再次前往中国，在德国驻北京公使馆担任科学顾问。同时，他还在北京大学教授德国文学和哲学，与一个由德国人和中国人组成的小组共同编写了一本德英汉哲学词典，张君励是这个小组的成员之一。他和北大的校长蔡元培也建立了深厚的友谊，蔡元培曾在德国留学，同样肩负着沟通德中两国的使命。</span><span style="font-size: 10pt;
